The rising rates of mood disorders, cognitive symptoms like "brain fog," and non-specific symptoms like fatigue are attributed to many things. They include things like socioeconomic changes, urbanicity, dietary changes (Western-style diet), sedentary behavior, excessive screen-based information consumption, lack of adequate sunlight, reduced off-line social support, and an overall disconnect from nature. Research, both recent and from the turn of the 20th century, indicates that proper gastrointestinal function plays a role in proper brain function. Through several factors like microbial balance, 'leaky gut,' immune stimulation, and inflammation, the health of the gut is increasingly being seen as vital to brain health.
